Childlike Wonder - 01/13/21
[Eligor]
Outside of his Mist house, Eligor, seemed to be levitating above the ground. Every so often, a droplet of water from the outdoor bath was plucked one by one, forming a line that started as a circlet around his head before slowly but surely forming a trail of sorts around his body, each droplet moving in uniform and remaining separate from one another even as he added more water to the exercise. Eventually, he changed his position, moving his body from a sitting pose to that of one lying down so that he appeared to be sleeping on the air. Aether grew thick enough around his body to be visible, causing small distortions here and there around his person, until eventually a thick purple cloud formed above him like an angry storm. |
Nearby on the ground, there was a lalafell. Covered head to toe in what appeared to be Ishgardian attire, the woman was very much bleeding out on the front lawn, seemingly unable to move. |
[Novine]
Novine stepped out of the aether casually and kept walking, seeming to have already sensed her Father's aether while en route as she stepped intentionally across the yard toward him, her eyes regarding the scene and trying to make some kind of sense as to the story that could lead to such a sight.
She looked up at Eligor and regarded him with a simple “Hi,” before looking low and examining the fallen lady, hands clasped behind her back and leaning forward, not wanting to step in the puddle of blood that was seeping out of her but wanting to see what was happening nonetheless.
“So, what's this then?”
[Eligor]
There was a pulse, but the aether did not dissipate, it compressed into three orbs—one of water, another of lightning, and the last of roiling clouds before Eligor landed in the ground, his eyes having gone completely white and blackened vein-like marks stretching across his cheeks and nose.
“This…is an assassin. Come here to kill me.”
“I took the opportunity to run a few tests.”
He stretches the joints in his left hand in such a way that they audibly pop before he playfully points his finger with a newly grown claw at the end, and the water orb immediately slides into the woman’s mouth.
He smiles as she fails to scream, her lips instead quickly turning red.
“You’ll have to forgive me. You see, I tried to maintain the temperature of the water but as you can see I might have increased it a little by accident. Finer control of these things is still beyond me for the moment.”
[Novine]
Novine stepped back a tiny bit to avoid being splashed by any water in case a few flecks happened to fly her way, but watched on as if she were a child viewing an insect with a magnifying glass. Her brow narrowed in annoyance and anger at the fact that someone sent someone to kill her Father, but she remained mostly calm.
“What kind of tests? And do you know who sent 'em?”
[Eligor]
“I wanted to see how long I could retain control. The shock of so much aether knocked me free, but it’s been so long I’m starting to wonder if it is indeed temporary. Perhaps that thread finally snapped.”
“As for who sent this insect, I truly could not care less. I need not know the origin of every sacrifice presented to me.”
[Novine]
“Not sure what you're talking bout. Threads and stuff. You weren't letting that thing take control, were you?”
[Eligor]
“I am not a thing. I am me.”
He removes the water from the woman’s mouth, looking at her with fading interest as she sputtered on the ground.
“Enough about that. Would you like to grow stronger?”
[Novine]
She crosses her arms and turns on her foot to go sit on the bench farther across from the yard, cross-legged, her back to Eligor and leaning against the support pillar. Whatever was happening with the assassin, she decided she wasn't interested in it anymore, expressing her annoyance for The Thing as she called it through sheer petty brattiness.
“Well yeah, but your way only helps you. I know how you do stuff n' I'm not interested.”
[Eligor]
“No. You’re my daughter. My helping you helps me keep peace of mind.”
He moves in close, smiling.
“It fills me with joy to watch you grow.”
“Can’t you feel it? We are getting harder to tell apart now. We are ever close to becoming I now.”
[Novine]
“Yeah. I can feel it. And I'm sure it brings you lots of joy, dreaming about stuff you wanna eat, bodies you wanna steal. The way you're talking now though, that's how I know there's still two of you. Father knows I hate you, n' wouldn't bring it up like this.”
She turns her head stubbornly away from him, hugging her crossed arms closer to herself.
[Eligor]
“Mmm…or maybe that one is the fake. The father you want to see showing you what you’d like. Maybe I’m the real one, and what you think is real is just an elaborate lie.”
[Novine]
“Maybe, maybe not,” she says with a moody shrug, collapsing more into her shroud of angst.
“Anyways, if you're talking to me 'cause you wanna learn how to pretend better, I'm not gonna help.”
She hugs her knees close to her chest in a pouty sort of way, still turning her back to him as she sits on the bench.
[Eligor]
“Would you prefer if I forced you?”
He waved his arm, and the would-be assassin was lifted from the ground by some unseen force, the slow mending of her mouth and subsequent surprise implying that she was the recipient of a rather powerful healing spell.
“This girl is a danger to me. Once I let her go, she will surely try again. I’ve no reason to resist. Would you allow me to die?”
[Novine]
Novine turned toward him, looking over her shoulder and giving him the most hateful look the girl could muster.
“No, I wouldn't. Not yet.” She hopped off the bench and turned to face him, clearly wanting to be ready in case something were to happen.
“What do you even want from me anyway? Just to watch me as you dangle your accomplishment over my head? Or do you have some weird fantasy where you've just always wanted to be a father and you wanna play house and want me to play with you?”
[Eligor]
He smiles again and looks off to the distance.
“You cannot understand because you were born in an incomplete state. I made our people perfect. With each generation, they grew stronger, smarter, and ever greater. But more than that, I removed the primary cause of collapse between people’s. Mutual empathetic communication. No longer would mysteries of the heart be hidden—we would know true prosperity the likes of which could only be gained through invisible and unspoken communication.”
“I know you feel it. The truth in my words. A few more generations and we would have been unstoppable.”
“I do not feign love, child. I only express it in its truest form.”
[Novine]
She sighs and crosses her arms again.
“Sure, I guess that's one thing you could do. Just seems you're more into weird rituals, squishing people into odd shapes, putting your host's body in danger, and reaching your own goal of finally getting control than you are about wanting to actually connect or use that kinda power for any good. All you wanna do is feed on us and move to someone else when you've had your fill. You can try n' dress it up nicely with a truth that makes you feel better about things, but every interaction with you has led to nothing but chaos.”
[Eligor]
“Feeding me improves you. Why do you refuse to see? Gods may seem cruel, but they work for their creations without cease.”
[Novine]
“Yeah, but for how long? You just take n' take n' take until there'd be nothing left to take from the person. No point in getting power if it's just gonna be a flash in the pan, y'know.”
[Eligor]
“I suppose you’re just too young.”
[Novine]
“How so? Aren't the young just ready to throw away their lives for power 'cause they think they're invisible?”
[Eligor]
“You are too young to see even the smallest hints of my grand design.”
He releases the woman, but she does not immediately lunge at him, instead looking over herself in disbelief as she regains control of her limbs.
“Were you not here to end me, sacrifice? I suggest you get on with it.”
[Novine]
Novine regards the woman, watching her like a coiled snake as she uncrosses her arms and sighs, lifting a hand that now had five tightly compressed levin orbs hovering over each finger tip, ready to do what she had to if the woman forced her hand and so much as took a step toward them, making good on her word that she had no intention of letting the woman kill her father's body.
“I'm always too young, too weak, too stupid, and too dumb it seems. I wonder… does it make you all feel good to hint at things you have no intention of sharing? Make you feel nice and strong and powerful? Can't think of a more pointless conversation to have really if I was the one who had all the knowledge.”
[Eligor]
“That thirst and irritation you feel is the proof. It must constantly be checked by those of higher standing. It is not because those who are higher enjoy the world firmly beneath their heel, but out of a need to find others like them. Proof that they are not isolated. The mark that shows a peer rather than…well…”
The woman remained frozen where she stood, eyes locked onto Eligor.
“Sadly there are none beyond me. I am the last. Solitude is my reward and curse.”
“Think of it this way my child. I can reveal my every secret to you, but if you cannot grasp it on your own, what worth are you? Have I not wasted my time showing you a concept you cannot hope to fathom? But if I dangle the answer just in front of your nose…if you find it for yourself…there is…”
He looked troubled for a moment, the veins on his face disappearing.
“I'll share a secret with you both. We have tried in the past. Revealed all without keeping a wisp of the truth hidden. Blank stares. Disbelief. Anger, and rage, and lashing out. We might not agree on much on the matters of the world, but we do agree that sharing information before it is ready to be received is harmful. Is that no the true source of your irritation? The knowledge that you somehow do not yet meet our criteria?”
[Novine]
“So since literally no one has thought your idea's any good, you decided you'd have to take the long haul approach to convince people, grooming and manipulating then? I'm just mad you're doing it with such glee, and that you're using my Father's body to do it. Let your good idea stand in its own. You're probably just mad I'm not willing to run into your open arms, all enthusiastic about your shitty bait.”
[Eligor]
The black marks on Eligor’s face began to fade.
“Times up it seems…”
[Novine]
Novine continues to hold her hand aloft, eyes locked onto the would-be assassin, seeming to have gathered even more aether as it crackles up her arm now, slowly building up her attack should she need to release it. Her crystal glows faintly from beneath her bangs.
“What a shame,” she replies tersely and wryly.
[Eligor]
Eligor sighs, and the woman seems released from her own tension, sitting in place on the ground.
“I…hm. I do not keep things from you because you cannot…why do you speak to it?”
[Novine]
Novine slowly lets all that aether she built up soak back into her, the attack appearing to move backward in time as she lowers her arm. She looks rather sheepishly at Eligor and hangs her head, stepping backward until she can hop back on the bench.
“Because… I don't know sometimes how… How close you both are. If I can get it to talk more, to understand it more then I can maybe figure out when it's not right more easily. And maybe it'll tell me something that can help.”
[Eligor]
He quickly grabbed his would be assassin by the neck, lifting her from the ground.
“If you wish to kill me, do it elsewhere. You do not come to my house. You do not intrude upon my soil. You were sent here to die, girl. But that need not be the case.”
He released the woman before placing his hands behind his back.
“Kneel. Serve me, and you shall know joy beyond what you can imagine. Or flee back to the one who sacrificed you. Either way, you’ll not get a second chance.”
His eyes burned a low glow, and after some brief hesitation the lalafell did indeed kneel, bowing her head as she did so.
“Now then…did you come just to see me my daughter?”
“Or did you have some business?”
[Novine]
She kicks her feet lightly off the side of the bench as she flicks her eyes between her father and the kneeling woman, her eyes lingering on the latter as she spoke as if suspicious, or curious how long she would actually stay in that position.
“Well, I read that thing. The report. You did say you wanted to spend more time with me, so partly that. That's why I got so mad at that dumb creature. Takes away and wastes our time. Anyway, I've been thinking all the stuff over, n' I had some questions about it.”
[Eligor]
“So you do.”
He places a linkpearl in the woman’s ear.
“Leave us. You will return here first bell tomorrow. You will wear clothes that allow you to blend in, and you will wait at the foot of the stairs. I will not tolerate failure. Now leave us.”
The woman stands up in complete silence and walks away, disappearing downstairs as her armor jingled faintly in the distance. When she was suitably far enough away, he turned his head back towards Novine.
“And your questions are?”
[Novine]
She tilts her head a bit as she watches the woman seamlessly obey, pursing her lips as she follows her progress walking away, having never seen her Father perform that particular trick before. Once she was far enough away, her head went back to gazing at her father.
“Would the fragments be going through exactly what I did? Like… well, I think the hardest thing was that I remembered who I was before. My source's life. Those memories being given back, I think that's what, if anything, was gonna break me. M'not sure how many would be able to handle passing the time with all that sudden confusion. N' the people might not be very stable. It's not really unlike how that Thing feels. Some sudden wave of compulsions and values feeding into your mind that you didn't always have or want, but are kinda helpless to push away.”
[Eligor]
“I’m not sure that there is a guarantee of life from effectively nothing. Life is possible, but intelligent life does not simply spawn from nothing. If we completely remove what was before we risk it being no different than say…water, or air.”
“In other words, there must be a blueprint. Can you create one? One that will produce different and unique individuals?”
[Novine]
“I dunno, but, well, I lived a whole bunch of lives before I was given memories from my Source. I only remembered the last one, but couldn't they just be given the memories they make during their cycles? As long as the cycles they go through were different enough, wouldn't that be enough? If something bad happened to Eorzea, having memories that only existed before whatever you think is gonna happen to it might make even worse though. Working to return to a place they remember, working hard and finally getting to live, only to live and find out the place they worked to live was now gone? I think they might come out more chaotic than I did. Angry n' stuff.”
[Eligor]
“We can make the attempt, but….there is always a chance the memories will resurface. This is not entirely explored territory after all.”
[Novine]
“If they happen 'cause they need to happen that's fine but.. Being given them suddenly, that's what was hard. Do you plan to tell people what's gonna happen before you take the memories? 'Cause like… Maybe if they have a memory of being told what would happen and what they should do before the fragment would be taken would help. I had memories up until the exact moment the sample was taken that were given back to me in a single moment. I know you didn't know what was gonna happen so it's fine, but I wonder if providing directions might help make it easier for them to integrate. Otherwise, it's like you're just thinking about how your life was supposed to go, how you're bitter that someone else got to keep live it, or you end up mourning opportunities you have to miss out on. Creates a lot of weird dysphoria and stuff.”
[Eligor]
“Some of the samples that exist no longer have a living source.”
“It would not be possible for them.”
“Is that what you wish to do if you take further samples? Inform them?”
[Novine]
“Well, you said at one point you could take my memories of my Source from me. Could we inform them and then erase that memory from those who are still living? Obviously I think that could cause some… issues. I guess if a bunch are coming from Raziel's people up there, they could be told some pretty prophecy or something that they'll think is nice.”
[Eligor]
“I think your judgement might be clouded in this regard. We do not need to safeguard their minds. They are not you, nor are they special. They are the back up in case things go wrong. In the instances where we can create life—real, and sustaining life, we can indeed simply remove memories and let them start over.”
“This is the basis for improved life forms. They will not need things like memories to learn or survive.”
[Novine]
Novine crosses her arms and gives her Father a frustrated look.
“I thought the whole point in giving me any kind of choice orninout in this was to hear my judgment. I don't wanna doom a whole army of people to go through stuff that most people can't handle. They're NOT me, and they're NOT special, so they might not be able to stand it! It was hard!” she explains in an impassioned way. “If you're just gonna do what you think is right, why even ask me in the first place!?”
[Eligor]
“Is that what this looks like to you? Doing what I think is right?”
He placed a hand on his neck, rubbing it.
“You do not want my opinion. Understood. What are your other questions?”
[Novine]
“I do want your opinion, but it seems you don't want mine. You talked in the report about wanting my perspective 'cause you haven't experienced it, and you pretty much just dismissed it. N' you say you want a whole bunch of different people, you need people to have memories so they know how to live, only you're gonna strip 'em away as soon as they're alive and start over anyway? That doesn't make any sense! If you're gonna take all the memories, don't even give them their real ones in the first place. They could all just be given the same template, something that's actually not gonna drive people to levels of insanity.”
“What's the whole point in wanting people to be different if you're just gonna make 'em start from nothing?”
[Eligor]
“This is selective hearing.”
“The first thing you are confusing is the initial problem. Creating intelligent life has a much lower probability of success with no basis to go over. Think of it like a mold.”
“Once that mold has done its job, we no longer need it. It is only there to serve as the spark. If we encounter problems due to that very same mold, we have the option to remove the memories entirely. By that point, they will not need them anyway. Rather than deal with madness, they can be reset and therefore less manic.”
“You will remember I did not give you the offer before it was safe. The difference is I suggest you do not give them a choice.”
“Who can hope to reasonably rehabilitate thousands of people experiencing an internal crisis all at once?”
[Novine]
She sits and lets the truths sink in, her grumpiness still present, but losing some of its edge as she adapts her thought process, allowing her entertain the idea with less resistance.
“I guess… whatever happens, I don't want it to just be just life… like… there'll be a society to join? Are they gonna be able to grow? Live in a meaningful way? Even if they're just fragments, they're lives that deserve a good chance.”
[Eligor]
“Did you live in a void? Was there no life for you before you came here?”
“More importantly, once they grow, will not the luxuries of their…incubation period not cause further suffering? We cannot hope to provide them with the same resources. For all we know, wherever they end up might have completely different rules from here. Would good intentions not then prepare them for failure and more pain?”
[Novine]
“I meant when they're done incubating. What'll be there for them when they're done? Is there a plan for that or is it just… hoping there's something? I figure with all this talk of being a king lately that you had something in mind for them.”
[Eligor]
He laughs.
“One moment you do not want my hand, the next you scorn it’s absence. I gave that project to you, to decide whether or not it was worthy of your attention or not. In that sense, they are not my people, they are yours.”
“I’m fairly certain I was quite clear about that in the report.”
[Novine]
“The report was vague! To me, it sounded like you wanted my organization's assistance but that you were gonna work on it anyway. You hinted at things! You told me you had been working on something, but didn't tell me what had already been done! You say there's a thing under the building, but you don't say at all what it even does, how it works, anything! You tell me you want my opinion and you just laugh at it and tell me I'm wrong when I try and provide my point of view! You even mentioned the ethics of it all in the report when asking for my opinion, and then you mock me for being concerned about doing what is right. Either help me understand or stop acting like I should know everything in your mind, because I never know what you're thinking. Why can't you just listen instead of smirk at me trying to learn something? If you actually care about life continuing, you're being annoyingly cavalier and blase about it.”
[Eligor]
“Calm yourself.”
[Novine]
She rolls her eyes and crosses her arms. “I was calm and you kept pushing me. You keep doing this to me, and you know it.”
[Eligor]
“I keep doing this to you?”
“I’m pushing you?”
Places a hand on his forehead.
[Novine]
“Yeah. It's like you get amusement out of me trying to scramble to figure out things. All I wanted to do was help and now i'm leading some organization without having been prepared even though you said you'd train me, and I'm being made to a bunch of weird choices I can't see the scope of… Now you're handing me some other project you couldn't finish. It's like you're just dumping stuff you don't wanna deal with onto me. I don't know what I'm doing and you just watch and laugh or tell me it's not good enough, like you know the answer but you won't help me find it.”
[Eligor]
“Pathetic.”
“I've had more than enough of this….weakness you continue to force me to watch. You have the foolish pride to sit there and criticize my methods as if it were my intent to shove you into trouble after trouble to watch you squirm…as if I would need to work to have you run about eyes wide and confused.”
His eyes come to a burning glow, and smoke begins to flow upwards in a steady stream from his mouth as he spoke.
“I have no need to confuse you girl, I've had circumstances thrust upon me beyond my control again and again and again and again and again without cease. Did you imagine I put myself to sleep for FUN? Did you think I gave you responsibilities for my entertainment of all things? I had no choice but to believe you and the family could act properly in my absence. I had to believe you would learn and adapt and grow without my guiding hand pulling you along every step of the way.”
Sparks began to filter from his mouth.
“Seeing as I am now awake sooner than planned, Alkaid is awake, and your organization that has gone exactly nowhere both before and after my return, CLEARLY I was mistaken about your ability.”
“Now I give you something to focus on, a project you might pick up or abandon according to your whim, and still somehow that is not enough for you. It is me wishing to watch you struggle. Keeping things from you. YOU COME HERE READY TO ACCUSE ME OF WRONGDOING! DARE TO SPEAK AS IF YOU KNOW MY INTENTS, THEN BACK PEDDLE LIKE A COWARD AND BLAME ME FOR YOUR INABILITY TO LEARN OR SEE OR ADAPT. Then it is that I do not tell you enough, not that I pick and choose to torment you.”
“My foolish apprentice slams ever more problems onto my plate, reducing the already limited time I have with my working mind and now this. My own daughter mistakes my problems as malice directed at her!”
“Do not pretend you did not come here with these words burning at the back of your throat.”
He moves in closer, leaning to stare into Novine's eyes.
“How long have you harbored these feelings towards me? How long have you smiled at me pretending you were fine while festering in this poison?”
[Novine]
She was clearly alarmed by his change in behavior, but she grit her teeth and tensed her body rather than cower. Her words held truth and there was no shame in them and she wouldn't take them back. But his intimidation clearly had an effect. Her voice was softer, more timid.
“Since you got back. You're different sometimes. I don't know which one's listening, what I can tell you, what I can ask without risking too much. If I keep the conversation normal, then it feels like it used to. Anything else and it feels like I'm possibly walking into traps it's setting up for me.”
[Eligor]
“Imagine living with it.”
“To have to second guess your every thought. To be careful of your very thoughts.”
“I had the impulse to kill that girl. I wanted to very badly. She invaded my home. YOUR home. What if had been one of you instead?”
“But can I be sure that is me? Can truly…is there anything left it cannot touch?”
“You think it is only there when it makes a point to show itself. Only…” He sighs, but sparks still fly from his mouth.
“Forget it.”
[Novine]
“I know it's worse for you. I get you have your reasons so I just try and let it go, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong to be in the position I'm in,” she adds in self defense. “I'm allowed to be mad at it too.”
“I just wanna help stop it. But I don't know what to do. Just… I keep getting given other things to do. Makes me think it's trying to distract me.”
[Eligor]
Black veins appear on his face again
“You're all too weak. You will just make it worse. That's why I went away. None of you can stop it. None of you have the courage to do what must be done. To kill what must be killed because it wears my face.”
He blinked, and his eyes suddenly went back to normal.
“I've been practicing my magic. Have you been experimenting?”
[Novine]
Novine stayed silent and huffed, shaking her head as the very thing that poisoned her thoughts shot back her way before she takes a beat to refocus on his new question.
“A bit. Been thinking the arcanist stuff is too complex. Butterflies are cool, but the way they are right now divides the power of my attacks too much, and I haven't been able to change the way they work to make them cast independently of my casts. Just not sure how to fix it or how to enhance them I guess. What've you been doing with yours?”
[Eligor]
Eligor sits on the ground, absorbed in Novine's explanation.
“What is causing the problem when trying to make them cast independently of you? I'm not sure precisely how you are going about trying it.”
“Let me try thinking of something for a moment….”
He rubs his chin for a moment, looking at the sky for a moment before snapping his fingers and noticing for the first time that at some point his claws had returned. The tips of his fingers appeared to be burned.
“Well, if it were me, I would try something simple to supplement potential problems. For example, doing calculations in real time could be troublesome, but if you think of them as simply disposable, then there are a number of ways to approach it. Assuming you are using a formula for this, there is no reason why you cannot treat it like an issue of marking.”
He opens his palm, and a fireball appears just above it before it splits in half. One of the halves begin to decay a bit and turn a darker shade of red before shrinking to half of it's normal size.
“You can have the formula for the butterflies prewritten on something, with room to make last minute changes as necessary. This formula would have the uh….hmm…let us think of it as the output. The formula and the resulting construct only exist to output a current of magic.”
He separates the fireballs a small distance away from one another.
“You then can create a formula for the receiver. Think of it like an aetheric tag. This tag will always be the target of your constructs. You could try putting it on people but that would require you to actually get it on them, and the surest method of that is getting close, so it could pose a problem. Instead, why not make it a secondary construct? This way they are in pairs and they all have a specific function.”
“That leaves the problem being power. You would need time to increase the amount of aether in the construct, and it would be counterproductive to waste your own reserves for a weaker output, so instead we add to the formula. Once it has been released, it is set to absorb a set amount of aether from the environment and release it on the receiver construct.”
A tiny little spark of flame sputters clumsily from the smaller fireball to the larger one.
“But I think we can take it a step further for efficiency. What if the receiver is designed to return the aether directed into it like a current? The amount of aether lost in the transfer would be miniscule, you would prevent mistakenly overdrawing aether from the environment, and should ideally be able to create a constant assault. If the attack hits the enemy then even if it is tiny it still can build over time or give you the opportunity for a greater attack. It can even serve as a distraction. If it misses, it hits the receiver instead and the aether gets recycled.”
“Would a set up like this be helpful at all to you? I think it has the potential for many applications and keeps stress for the user to a minimum, while keeping the theme you have adopted as well.”
[Novine]
Novine's grumpiness faded little by little as she listened, her eyes widening as he explained the system. They seemed to sparkle a bit with her approval as she listened.
“….That's so… elegant!” she decided, as if Starlight had come again. “I was getting so tired in my fights the way it as before, the whole system a bit taxing, honestly, but that would fix a lot. Guess I've gotta figure out formulas and stuff again though, she adds in a disappointed sort of voice, clearly finding this the most distasteful part of arcanistry.
“I'd say that's pretty perfect, really. I imagine I could still switch their aspects without that being a problem too, to change the type of current being sent out…”
“Wonder why more people don't do that sorta thing. I've heard of people absorbing their constructs to refill their reserves, but not making a closed system like that.”
[Eligor]
“Mages in general tend to be limited in the innovation and imagination aspects of the craft. I think the problem lies equally in tradition and danger. Traditional spells work and deliver the desired result as long as you follow the instruction. Creating spells or modifying existing ones not only carries the chance of failure, but also that of painful injury. In some cases far worse.”
“Arcanism in this aspect is likely superior to other arts. The limitations of what can occur are outlined before the spell is even released, and even in the cases where it is not, there is still a limited output so the danger of catastrophic failure is massively reduced.”
“After you've done the formulas enough times, you will memorize them whether you like it or not. If you master this to the extreme, it could even reduce the normal necessary casting requirements because the script already exists within your head. The transference would be that much faster.”
“Provided you do not go too far, I could even see some minimal fusion being possible. Assuming you wish to continue adopting the theme anyway.”
“Arcanistry in particular is a field of magical application I have quite a high respect for. Especially so due to proper application of it being the opposite of one of the things I fear the most.”
[Novine]
She nods along and clearly gets a bit inspired by the fusion idea, a big grin forming on her features.
“Yeah, but that's why it's so disappointing that they just stop at Carbuncles and don't bother teaching for something more, y'know? Kinda a waste.”
She sits up straighter, her quick shifting moods leaning toward a more upbeat, enthusiastic posture.
“Why do I have to keep all the formulas in my head though? I should write 'em down somewhere, right? Maybe not where the crystals are this time,” she ponders aloud as she examines her tiny, intricate tattoos forming orderly ranks up and down her arms.
“Guess the formula might be a bit more complicated in the end… Dunno if I can truncate it as much if it's a lot more advanced…”
She suddenly jolts to a realization.
“Oh! But… What's it you fear about the opposite of it anyway?
[Eligor]
“You should write them down yes. I mean that if you memorize the formula there should be no need for the written version in situations where it is not accessible.”
His expression darkens, the black marks on his face growing darker as well.
“I fear perfection. Arcanistry is something of a natural nemesis to the idea of perfection.”
[Novine]
“Why be afraid of that? As much as I talk about people reaching potential and stuff, perfection's more like some religious tenet that I don't think anything here can actual reach. To me, it's like a myth I guess.”
[Eligor]
“Perfection is a disease to innovation. For a researcher or even a warrior, perfection represents the absolute pinnacle of what something could ever be. It is the goal that should always remain the standard of progress, but ultimately the greatest enemy of any who pursue it.”
The fireballs fade away as he speaks.
“Imagine if your goal was to throw the ultimate punch. Suppose that your every day is spent tirelessly pursuing that one goal without rest. You are happy and content, yet frustrated with the elusiveness of your goal. It drives you forward. Forces you to be more in order to see your ambition to fruition.”
“But suddenly….it ends. You perfect the punch. Nothing can ever be greater than your newly perfected punch? What is left for you?”
“There is nothing more to improve. Nothing to pursue. It is effectively finished, and gone. That is when you realize that perfection is the limit of what that thing could be. What is left to the pursuer of perfection once it has been obtained? What value is there in reaching a world where there can be nothing else?”
“Perfection is a void.”
[Novine]
She hums thoughtfully and kicks her legs energetically as she runs the scenario through her head.
“How do you know it's perfect though? Even when I ran out of things to learn and simulations to make in Eitr, when I thought I was perfect, turns out I wasn't even close. Perfection is only subjective to your frame of reference, but to someone else, it's probably not perfect at all. Don't really think there's anything to fear there really.”
“What're you trying to perfect anyway that you're so close to be freaked out by it?”
[Eligor]
“It’s nothing I’m close to. I’ve simply seen perfection in action. She hated it.”
[Novine]
“Who? And I guess once you've reached perfection if you actually can do that wouldn't you have to maintain it? If you don't keep doing something and staying active, you'll decline in them eventually, so isn't that a reason to keep you driven?”
[Eligor]
He shakes his head.
“Not a story for today.”
[Eligor]
“Moving on, I thought you should know that I’ll be leaving Eorzea soon. I need to go to the war front.”
[Novine]
She sighs and slumps her shoulders a bit, disappointed but trying not to throw a fit regardless.
“Where to this time? How long?”
[Eligor]
“Bozja. I’m not sure how long it would be. My apprentice is creating problems beyond her understanding.”
[Novine]
“Oh? What's she doing? Can't you just… make her leave if she's being problematic?”
[Eligor]
“She’s using the grimoire to create subordinates.”
“I assume it’s to resuscitate that girl Blue but if the situation is worse than that…it would be a complete stranger.”
“As the core is still in my possession, I still get the rebound of aether, and feel the….control over the fragments extend to me. There is a time lag but it is there.”
“Such rebounds are…” The black marks fade from his face. “Not good for me. They force emotion in a way I cannot defend against, and the surge in aether gives my…parasite a stronger hold over my mind.”
“Beyond the implications of what she is doing alone, she is also reducing my already limited time here.”
[Novine]
Novine looks annoyed as he desribes the problem. “Why can't they just keep their drama out of our lives?” she bemoans. “Always someone making things difficult. She probably doesn't even care what stuff does to you,” she accuses bitterly.
[Eligor]
“Maybe not, but I’ll need to stop her all the same. The danger that is her potential is greater than most realize. Left unchecked and unguided, she will go down the path I nearly did myself. The power is….intoxicating.”
“Suddenly realizing just how powerful the tool at your fingertips is trivializes rational thought. It is not something altogether impossible for you to imagine I think. Because of my failures, one day inevitably you too will experience this intoxication first hand. The realization that amongst the frail and the flesh, you walk as a god.”
“I worry that your arrogance will blind you, but humility is no better illumination.”
[Novine]
“Hmm. Maybe. I'm usually pretty good at finding the truth in there somewhere in the end though. The arrogant part is just to kinda psych myself up for challenges. I usually know when something's gonna be harder even if I don't look like it,” she explains, seeming a little scandalized.
“If I was THAT arrogant, I would've told that thing I'm gonna kick its ass and go n' actually do it by now.”
Her voice gets a bit softer, a little bit more vulnerable. ” 'Sides, m'taking notes. M'not just gonna blindly run down some path cause it's got pretty shiny stuff lining both sides when I know the merchants selling those things are scumbags.”
[Eligor]
“That’s the problem at the moment sadly.”
“It is not some obviously bad path or thing that simple thinking will help you to avoid.”
“It is like…not doing something for a long time. You know that you shouldn’t do it, but one day you cannot remember why you should not anymore.”
“It does not seem that big of a deal, so you do it. And it feels good. It gives you what you want. Why would you stop?”
[Novine]
“'Cause I see the result in action too much to wanna give in even a little. But.. I guess I know what you mean.”
[Eligor]
“Good. Your cat should also return to you once he’s healed.”
[Novine]
“My cat? What, is F'loki out there or something? That why I haven't seen him in awhile?”
[Eligor]
“No. He tried to attack me is all. Frustration reached a limit with him.”
“He is the type to act when backed into a corner mentally is all. Now that he’s gotten it out of his system, he should be fine for quite a while.”
[Novine]
“Oh. Was it over A'erina stuff? She's been weird and the both of them together just makes stuff weirder.”
[Eligor]
“That was a part of it yes.”
“Either way, you are not wanting projects from me, correct? Is there anything else you wanted to speak about presently?”
[Novine]
“Well, it's not like I don't like having stuff to do, I just don't like the ones where it's like… me needing to make uninformed decisions. Why, there something you'd want me to do other than the other stuff? N' I dunno if we left the other issue resolved either. I'm willing to help with it. I just wanted to make sure they're being set up for success is all. I was missing the details about that kinda stuff.”
[Eligor]
“At the moment I want you to give your people some direction. Perhaps put that mascot to work.”
[Novine]
“Hm… guess she could promote more. Kinda told her she could just work when she wanted to and I guess not much's been going on for people to be upset about. I've just been wanting to maybe set up some more bases so that they can do more missions in father places easier, compete with the adventurer guilds and stuff. Guess if we expand we'll need more people.”
[Eligor]
“If you say so.”
[20-Jan-21 09:18 PM] [Eligor]
“Any problems?”
“And what about the previous issue is unresolved?”
[Novine]
“I do say so,” she says with a little bit of a huffy tone imbedded.
“Oh, Tod wanted to know if you could make him a sword… other than that, I can't think of anything new…”
“As for the stuff unresolved, we just yelled at each other. I still don't know what the thing is under the building, or what of my resources you need. If you want me to have a direction for the order, but you want me to help with this, shouldn't that kind of stuff be stuff I should know before I point the ship at something that's completely in an opposite direction?”
[Eligor]
“…..What kind of sword is he expecting? Does he not have the means to obtain something from Limsa Lominsa?”
[Novine]
Novine shrugs. “I didn't ask him any more about it, but he seemed to say it'd be nice if he could have one that'd help him be better with magic. Not sure exactly what he meant, but I told him I'd tell you. I can ask him more questions if you want, if you even wanna do it.”
“I'm sure he could get his own - he's got lots of money he could use, but I think he realizes yours would be a bit specialized.”
[Eligor]
“Mhm….Did he have any help coming to that conclusion?”
[Novine]
“No, he told me he was gonna ask you first, n' I offered to put a word in since he was gonna do it anyway.”
[Eligor]
“Hm. The thing under the building is…an ark. Assuming you’ve decided not to abandon the project, it is ready for use and would need…materials in order to properly produce an output.”
“This still assumes you think the project worthy of pursuing. It was never required that you take it on.”
[Novine]
“The idea is fine. I like the aim of the project, it's just the particulars I was curious about. It'd be stupid not to take advantage of something we know works in the end, y'know?”
[Eligor]
“Even if it’s for a future in which we have failed to survive?”
[Novine]
“Well why not? Maybe some people did that for us and that's why we exist now, y'know? If anything we'd be their creators still so there's still some satisfaction to that I guess. I'd prefer to make sure they're living well and stuff but… I dunno. I like the idea of something lingering that I helped to be like that.”
[Eligor]
“Then compile your ideas. I will let you know if they are something that I could reasonably accomplish. Then we can search for alternatives together.”
[Novine]
She grins and nods in a more excited way, clearly liking the idea of being included.
“Okay! I'll see what I can think of. N' when F'loki gets back, I'll have him n' Pipino help me get the organization going. I'm gonna go forward with my idea I think and fix the problems as they come up instead of worrying about 'em beforehand. Keep getting mixed messages about whether what I wanna do is possible or not so I'm just gonna go with my gut.”
[Eligor]
“Alright. Well be careful.”
[Novine]
“Always am! You be more careful. You're the one going to a warzone n' having assassins come.”
[Eligor]
“The assassins may not be exclusive to me. Do you want to sleep here?”
[Novine]
“Yeah, I think so, unless there's some reason I shouldn't.”
[Eligor]
“Not particularly. The house is secure.”
[Novine]
“Kay, then I will! Are you going right away then?”
[Eligor]
“No. I still have some preparations to complete.”
[Novine]
She hops up moves to take his hand, tugging it a bit and swinging it back and forth between them a little, appearing to be slightly shy about it as if afraid he'd snatch it away.
“Then you should sleep too before you do that!” she suggests, moving backward and attempting to back him back into the house.
[Eligor]
“Perhaps. But if we are done speaking of work….”
“I’d rather take you out instead. You may dislike eating, but perhaps it will be more enjoyable if you have something interesting to look at? I have a submarine, and with a little time we can go on a little trip under water for a while. The world looks….different down there. Quieter too.”
“If you want that is. I figured you are tired of my cooking as well.”
[Novine]
She stops her tugging but stays holding his hand.
“Oh! I never did get to go on it even after doing all that research and stuff. Was wondering when I'd get to see what was down there!”
“And no, I don't really get tired of your cooking, but it's probably wasted on someone like me. Food should be for people who actually want it and enjoy it more.”
[Eligor]
“People eat for enjoyment as well you know.”
[Novine]
“Yeah, I know - that's why I said give it to people who enjoy it more. If you ask me, I'd rather talk with someone when they're not trying to squish up a bunch of stuff in their mouths. Makes talking easier in the end I think. Maybe someday I'll change my mind, but it's too early still.”
[Eligor]
“Alright then. Well get ready and we’ll go.”
[Novine]
Novine giggles and runs off to the door, hanging off the doorknob as she opens it to look over her shoulder.
“Do I need anything special?”
[Eligor]
“Likely shorts or pants. There is a ladder.”
[Novine]
“Got it!” She says as she rushes into the house, feet pounding around inside being heard until the door shuts behind her.
As exuberantly as she entered, she burst forth from the door sporting rather casual, comfortable clothing, jogging back over to him.
“Ready!”
[Eligor]
Eligor looks her over for a while, appraising whether or not it was up to whatever standard he had. Apparently deciding he was satisfied, he offered his hand to Novine.
[Novine]
She takes his hand with an excited squeeze.
[Eligor]
Squeezing her hand back, he promptly turned and began walking down the stairs, leading Novine to the beach a short ways away from the house.
[Novine]
She jogs a few steps to catch up with him as he leads the way so she could be properly side by side, insisting on swinging their hands. “You keep it here? How long's it been here?”
[Eligor]
“Since last night. I wanted to check something.”
[Novine]
“Like what?”
[Eligor]
He lead her the docks and onto a small dinghy boat before he began rowing away from shore.
“Alkaid is awake. I wanted to make sure she was not growing stronger again already.”
“So I took a blood sample after she returned and began subjecting it to things I knew would serve to….deteriorate it.”
[Novine]
“Oh,” she says with a bit of a frown. “She hiding away or whatever she was doing before? I know she doesn't like being around people.” She leans over the side of the boat and dips her fingers in the water, creating a little wiggly wake behind her as they progressed. “She's fun, but I dunno if she likes me.
“Are you just doing stuff to protect her then?”
[Eligor]
“It's not about protection.”
“Alkaid is dangerous. Far more so when she is awake.”
“I do not create weapons that are impossible to destroy, but she is…..close enough to breaking that ideal.”
After a long while of Rowing, Eligor stops, coming to a stop a ways away from a small rock formation sticking out of the water.
“If she were to suddenly change, our options would be severely limited. That cannot remain the case.”
[Novine]
“Ah. She's getting stronger then… She can be a bit scary. So, are we doing something related to her then?”
She sits up in the boat and stretches.
[Eligor]
“Not at all. That is a side project.”
“This is meant to simply be a trip. I thought you might enjoy it.”
[Novine]
She smiles a little softer than normal. “I will! Just…I dunno, you're busy and I know you kinda like to do things in a logical way where things efficiently. Thought there might be something down here you wanted to still check!”
[Eligor]
“I will be checking on the status of a sealed item, but that will take moments.”
As he finished his sentence, a thick tube-like shape broke the surface of the water quietly, coming to a stop right before the rest of the mysterious body broke through to the surface.
From the shadow in the water, the structure was quite large–large enough that the full length of it was not visible from the little dinghy in fact.
[Novine]
She looked over the edge of the dingy, rushing to the side as it rose and causing the dinghy to rock back and forth in a way that might make someone who really hated traveling by water anxious.
“Is this the research one you talked to me about a long time ago?”
[Eligor]
“It is one of them yes. I’ve lost a few along the way, and expenses being what they are it is a waste to bother trying to build more if they might come under attack.”
“My ruin can only yield so many resources, and I would not have them depleted for scrap.”
Eligor takes a careful step onto the slippery surface, knocking on the side of the structure and looking around as if on alert.
Not long after, several latches and the sound of air being released push outward from the interior of the submarine, and Eligor offers his hand again, jerking his head in the direction of the new opening.
[Novine]
Being sensible and careful for once in her life, she mirrors her father's cautious steps. She vaguely looks around as he does, definitely not sure what she's supposed to be looking for but doing it anyway.
“Who's attacking 'em all? If it's just research, why do people care?”
[Eligor]
“The same thief who decided to turn Alkaid’s blood into a drug to prove a point.”
“This….adversary seems to be particularly fond of and interested in my affairs and assets. In other words….a petty existence.”
Eligor directs her towards a ladder, moving in behind her only once she climbed down herself.
[Novine]
She takes the hint and makes her way down the ladder after peering into the opening, preparing herself for whatever lays at the bottom.
“Ah, that person again. That drug thing still around? I know we hit it pretty hard in Thanalan but hadn't heard much about it lately. Thought maybe it was closer to being gone by now.”
[Eligor]
The interior of the submarine is much wider than it might have initially appeared, with what appeared to be engineers and scientists both going about their tasks with little to no regard for Novine's appearance, instead mostly nodding once before continuing on with their tasks. Eligor would grab Novine's hand again and take her into a corridor that lead to a flight of stairs going further down into the bowels of the structure.
“The drug is still around yes. That is what I sent my apprentice to deal with. Obviously, it has caused some problems.”
[Novine]
She happily allows him to take her hand again, her eyes not focused on where she is being led at first, curious orbs gazing over all the instruments and unfamiliar faces in turn as she walks automatically the opposite direction of her gaze.
“Is it just there then? That'll be the end of it?”
She finally lets her snap back the proper direction, jogging a couple steps to catch up so it was less like he was pulling her though the vessel.
[Eligor]
At the very bottom was pitch black unlike the well lit area they had entered. Leading her deeper into the shadows through a series of puffing steam pipes and sudden turns, Eligor finally got to some unseen destination and let go of Novine's hand.
After several more moments in the dark, suddenly with a sound like a garage opening, the room was illuminated in deep blue light. The room was quite wide–wide enough that it might fit a small vehicle inside, and along the length of the room was what appeared to be some kind of glass, allowing one to peer at the watery expanse below and to the side of the submarine. Going a length from what might have been the edge of the submarine to a stopping point some third through the room, Novine would have had a good view of the world beneath the waves.
Almost as if on queue, the Submarine descended a small ways into the water and began moving slowly even further away from the shores of the Mists.
“I would have to survey the situation first but….we will see.”
[Novine]
She stayed close to him as she was lead through the darkness, not wanting to bump into anything, but not close enough to trip either of them up with messy shuffling footsteps. As the blue light cascades into the room and depths are laid bear for her to see, she lets go of his hand to rush over to the glass, practically pressing her nose up on it. Her eyes were wide as pressed her hands against the glass standing on her tip toes as if she would be able to see significantly lower and squatting down to see if she could see anything higher, hungry to get the lay of the ocean. Eventually she settled for just standing comfortably, stuck to the glass, eyes darting around in search of sea life.
“Hmm… well, I guess you made good progress! I imagine it took 'em a long time to make it and distribute things so… the fact that it's getting taken care of kinda quickly is nice.”
[Eligor]
At first, there would not be much at all in the way of life. It did not take long however for fish to start appearing as the submarine went into deeper waters, swimming dexterously to avoid the massive surface of the sub.
“Perhaps. Or perhaps there is still something that I have not noticed yet. There is still no discernible pattern to any of this chaos. I'm…not a fan of mysteries this dangerous.”
[Novine]
“Yeah, I guess that's one problem with being a really logical person… People who don't really follow patterns can just throw surprises around everywhere. It's like some honorable paladin in a barfight. But, y'know, I think the paladin has the better odds even if they throw some sneaky punches.”
[Eligor]
He does not respond, instead looking out into the waters.
“Do you like it down here? It is….quieter, I think.”
[Novine]
She turns from the glass with a big grin and nods.
“Yeah! I mean, I don't mind the noise so much. Being alone for too long can get at me. I like to see at least one other person in the day n' talk to them. But… I dunno, seems like when you're down here you can pretend there's not so much to do at least.”
She looks back out and follows the progress of a fish far ahead, focusing on it as the vessel moves to overtake it.
“Do you come down here a lot then?”
[Eligor]
“No. I only bother when work calls for me to do so.”
[Novine]
She hums to herself. “Well maybe you should come down here more then if you like it.” She pauses a moment. “Uh….Do you want me to be quiet? I can stop asking questions and stuff if you want.”
[Eligor]
“This trip is for you, not me. If I wanted silence I would have said so from the first.”
He crosses his arms and sighs.
“Now that I think on it, I suppose I can go continue my preparations.”
[Novine]
She looks over her shoulder trying badly to hide a pout. “Already?” She turns back to the glass. “What if my trip's better if you stay though? Do you know stuff about the fish? I don't really do a lot of fishing so I haven't learned about them yet… takes a long time to wait for the fish to come to you. This is a lot more effective!”
[Eligor]
“Well if I remember correctly you dislike eating, so there is no need to force that upon you.”
He motions to the glass.
“As for the fish, you can ask anyone here about them. Do you really need me here?”
[Novine]
She sheepishly taps her nails against the glass, starting to trace a little design with her pointer finger after a moment, distracted from the fish for a moment.
“Is it good enough to just want you here? Need probably isn't the right word.” She makes a little huff of a noise. ”'Sides, those researchers will probably be kinda boring to listen to.“
[Eligor]
He looks off at the wall, crossing his arms again and thinking, grumbling to himself all the while.
“Only until tonight. And in exchange, you will need to eat something. I want to check your etiquette while I have the opportunity. Beyond that, it is dangerous to delay.”
[Novine]
She looks over her shoulder at him again, a grin of victory on her face with a hint of actual gratefulness.
“Deal!” she agrees cheerfully. “Did you do lots of fishing? I figured since you've been in Limsa Lominsa for so long… Guess there wouldn't've been a lot of fishing back where you came from. Wasn't it mostly a desert?”
[Eligor]
“I've done fishing but I prefer hunting. Waiting for food to swim along your line is….boring, and it feels cheaper. Most…”
He stops, considering her question.
“I suppose it was a desert yes. Why do you ask?”
[Novine]
“Oh, well, you've told me about it before so I was just curious about the fish there, but I wondered if maybe there were any. Like when you were first able to come down here, I wondered if you'd have found it exciting to see so many.”
[Eligor]
“I did not think of things like that at the time. I knew what water and fish were already, but the concept of studying them never really struck me for a long while. They seemed to be….food. Nothing more than that. It was not until I received the blessing that I began to take more than simple acceptance into account.”
[Novine]
“Well I don't even mean studying them! What about just looking at them and thinking, 'wow, that one's new.' I feel like you can wanna eat it and think it looks exciting at the same time. Maybe that'd make you want to eat it more!”
[Eligor]
“I only took note of creatures that were difficult to kill, and why.”
[Novine]
She pouts slightly. “Hmm…. Well, do you still think like that?”
[Eligor]
“Somewhat. Creatures can have uses and features beyond survival, but it is the exceptional that gain attention, and the exceptional tend to be the hunters.”
[Novine]
“So is your sense of aesthetic like that too? Like you can't just appreciate something that looks nice, it has to be exceptional to some degree?”
She follows the path of a particularly interesting fish, a bit disappointed when the vessel overtakes it and it disappears underneath, unable to be observed any longer.
[Eligor]
“We are talking about fashion now?”
[Novine]
“No, not fashion necessarily. I guess if you wanna include it, I just mean in stuff you like to surround yourself with, or your concept if something looks nice. The appearances of things and your taste. Like does it only seem like something nice if it's exceptional?”
[Eligor]
He waited quietly, staring a hole into the metal walls.
“Why does what I like matter?”
“Function is a part of any appraisal. Why should I not include it?”
[Novine]
She shrugs. “Dunno, thought it'd be nice to get know things you like. I think the things people surround themselves with, or the lack of them, says a lot about a person! And what if I wanted to get you something for Starlight later this year or something?”
”'Cause some people like things that look pretty but don't have a lot of function! Kinda like how my butterflies are right now. Their imbalance bothers me.“
[Eligor]
“You should worry about your sisters, not me. I do not require gifts.”
[Novine]
“No one does really. Nice to know people think of you though, or they like you enough to find it worth doing.”
[Eligor]
“Is this leading somewhere? Do you want me to get something for you? I do not understand.”
[Novine]
“No, it's not going anywhere. Just… I dunno. I didn't like when it said I wouldn't know the difference.”
“I feel like I would but… I guess it's pointless 'cause it'd know if you said anything new,” she says in defeat, pressing her forehead against the glass in a way to be careful to avoid pressing her crystal against it.
[Eligor]
“Then answer this: why is it so important to you to make the distinction? What have I done to earn the extra effort when the danger is clear and certain?”
[Novine]
She shifts uncomfortably thinking about that for a bit, rolling her head back and forth against the glass. “Attachment to one and not the other. Denial maybe,” she says with a shrug. “I don't wanna forget how you were before.”
[Eligor]
“That does not answer the effort.”
“But I suppose it does not need to. I’ve a mystery for you.”
“If you needed to build a facility under water, how would you go about doing so?”
[Novine]
She seemed to be happy enough changing the subject. Changing the subject allowed her to pretend things were more normal.
“Hmm…. Does it need to be on the floor of the body of water, or can it be mobile? N' what kind of water? Ocean, lake?”
[Eligor]
“Ocean. Beyond that it does not matter.”
[Novine]
“Well, I'm kinda of two minds. I think I'd probably like to build it so it looks like a natural feature, y'know? Like in the side of a shelf. It'd be harder to detect and blend in more. Mobile would be the other one but if you get caught in the wrong place you're gonna stick out like a sore thumb, plus you're gonna be limited on size 'cause of the energy required to propel it. You'd have to defend more of it with shields n' spend a bunch of resources on that kind of stuff. Building it hidden in the environment would probably be best - less entrances to fortify, more hidden, less risky overall I think. Why?”
[Eligor]
“It was just a thought.”
“Considering options.”
[Novine]
“Well, that's my ideal! Probably easier said than done of course.”
[Eligor]
He does not respond, looking out into the deep.
“I’ll go make sure the food is being made easy to eat.”
[Novine]
She nods, keeping her gaze focused outwards.
”'Kay. Thanks.“
It appears she has become a bit broody, keeping her responses short and simple for once, as if she had given up on trying to have successful conversation at last.
[Eligor]
Eligor returned some time later, seemingly put off by Novine’s normal conversation. After setting up the table, Novine and Eligor had a rather basic meal of grilled fish and soup.
[Novine]
Novine stayed mostly quiet, but seemed to try to redeem herself in his eyes by actually eating quite well for her standards, trying extra hard to hide her expressions of discomfort while eating.
[Eligor]
Things did not get smoother over time, and as night came, Eligor eventually left to see to his preparations.
[Novine]
She gave him her usual advice - 'Stay safe' - before he left and she simply pushed her plate away, letting her head drop with a thud, banging the side of her head against the table in frustration as she let out an extremely annoyed noise that she had apparently been internalizing for the majority of the evening. Eventually, she simply decides it would be a lot less hassle just to teleport off of the vessel and back to her organization's building. Burying herself in research, working on new formulas - these were more constructive than the things she was really wanting to do, which consisted of throwing things and shooting off a lot of magic just because it would feel nice to have control over something for once. That could wait for when it was time to test the formulas.
