[Yoake]

It was a short journey from her modest room in Moraby Bay to the Mist, Yoake deciding to take the long route there. Step by step she journeyed, eyes wide. She even found herself smiling a bit as she enjoyed the rather peaceful solitude and beautiful vista. It was nice, being like this. Getting to continue being like this. She was grateful for the opportunity, she decided, though her mind wavered. For now though, she was glad to be alive to deliver her missive to the man who made it possible for her to have heard it in the first place. It wouldn't go very far in repayment, of course. She never could repay him, but it seemed like the right thing to do. She sighed lightly, Tret's advice making itself known in her conscience, urging her not to think of their relationship in such a way. She owed him nothing. She owed him nothing.

Yes, this was simply a favor.

Through the twisting streets she found herself in that yard that served as her new beginning. It felt strange, having moved, simply barging in again like she used to. She was unexpected now. She knocked with her knuckle and stepped back from the door, hands clasped in front of her as she awaited a response, hoping Eligor would be home and not one of the children.

[Eligor]

There was no response from the silent house nor anyone coming to answer. As usual, the house appeared devoid of life.

[Yoake]

She waited a rather long time, clearly not wanting to bother anyone before she would try knocking again, a little louder this time.

[Eligor]

There came a bang from inside, like something being knocked over, but still no answer.

[Yoake]

She leaned to the side carefully to perhaps see if she could see through the window from her place. Seeing as she could explain her sudden appearance as looking for one of her scant possessions left behind, she attempted the door, stepping in again and shutting it behind her quietly so it would barely make a sound.

“Pardon for the intrustion…” She stated as she looked around to see if there was anyone on the main floor.

[Veldi/Eligor]

In front of her would be Eligor, arm pinned against the wall by a sword run through it, with Veldi standing nearby, her revolver pointed at his face. She noticed Yoake and her already angry expression worsened, looking as if someone had twisted a knife into her gut.

“You call her here? Aint gonna stop me from—“

He silenced her with a smile, looking to Yoake soon after.

“I say, will you let her end me? I’m quite fragile you know.”

[Yoake]

Yoake paused, stepping back from them and surveying the scene with those calm, stoic eyes of hers, the only evidence of her surprise being her tense body.

“This is not my conflict. I do not know enough to interfere. You might deserve that fate.”

She found she had difficulty keeping her gaze off of Veldi though, the tortured expression causing her at last to look away toward the sword and the wound.

“And no. He did not call me here.” A pause as she decides that the man likely wouldn't die if she took her time. “What is happening?”

[Veldi/Eligor]

Veldi looked doubtful but said nothing.

“Such cold women. Is it because of the shared blood?”

Veldi drove the blade deeper into his arm.

[Yoake]

Her eyes narrowed at him seeing her response.

“If your intention is to purposefully anger her, you will find I can become colder.”

[Eligor]

“And I’m growing tired of idle threats. If you aim to harm me get on with it. My patience has limits.”

[Yoake]

Seeing the display she turns to Veldi, moving closer to her. “Would you like my assistance in this? Speak the word and you will have my loyalty.”

[Veldi]

She yanked the blade out of his arm and it disappeared, leaving him to rub the gaping wound.

“Why are you here?”

[Yoake]

“I was given information that was relevant to the mission I assisted with. I thought I should report it. I… did not know you had returned yet.”

[Veldi/Eligor]

“I haven’t.”

Eligor laughs again, shaking his head.

“You cannot go from stabbing me over her to pretending you can’t stand her you know. You’ll turn into me if you keep secrets.

He moves to pull a roll of bandages from his coat, but Veldi’s revolver pushed against his cheek stops him, prompting him to look to Yoake.

“If you are loyal to her then you should keep her in check. Her emotional outbursts are so….tiring. And hazardous.”

[Yoake]

“You are provoking her. She can keep the secrets she needs to keep. She can feel how she wants to feel about this. She can also handle her own affairs,” she says sharply. “My loyalty to her does not make me her master.”

[Eligor]

“Of course I’m provoking her. She’s angry about you being in the pantheon. As if she could avoid such a thing.”

[Yoake]

“Pantheon.” She looks between the two of them, suspicious, her voice taking an icier tone now. “What do you mean?”

[Eligor/Veldi]

“Have you ever wanted to be a god?”

Veldi pushes the revolver harder into his face, forcing him against the wall.

[Yoake]

She stands resolute and responds firmly and simply. “No. Never.”

[Eligor]

“That’s what she said.”

“Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to ask.”

[Yoake]

She looks confused and shakes her head. “…I do not understand.” Her eyes dart between them again in turn.

[Eligor]

“And as long as she keeps her secrets you never will.”

Deciding she wasn’t going to shoot him, Eligor began to bandage his bleeding arm, still pinned to the wall all the while.

“So? You had relevant information as you called it.”

[Yoake]

“I do. And you have information I would like now.” She didn't want to let the subject fade, it was clear.

[Eligor]

“I thought her secrets were hers to keep?”

[Yoake]

“Her secrets are. You mentioned me being in this pantheon.”

[Eligor/Veldi]

“Shame, I somehow don’t feel like revealing anything to someone so ready to kill me a moment ago.”

Veldi glares quietly again but pulls her revolver away, earning a chuckle.

[Yoake]

“A pity. I did not take you as someone so petty.”

[Eligor]

“Consider my feelings hurt.”

[Yoake]

She looks to Veldi, doing mental calculus as to whether she would ever share the information with her. Was it worth the fight? Should she do her favor and leave?

“Your feelings are irrelevant. Mine are as well. Shall we trade in facts?”

[Eligor]

“Then give me what you came here to deliver.”

[Yoake]

She takes a small resigned breath. “The woman who claims to have made Pyrefly found me at the fighting tournament. She says it is no longer necessary. It was part of an extended trial. Ending the distribution of the drug will not lead to victory over her.”

[Eligor]

“Woman?”

“Victory?”

[Yoake]

“A woman in a red robe. She claimed the facility we raided was hers.”

“Victory may not be the right sentiment. She will not be hindered if you pursue the leads you currently have.”

“She also seems to know that I have returned. She is very curious about how it was done.”

[Eligor]

“But of course. I’m quite the genius aren’t I?”

[Yoake]

“I would not know. You seem intelligent and have done much to me that I do not understand.”

[Eligor]

“Want to see the video of how I…dug around? It’s quite the show.”

[Yoake]

She makes a disgusted sort of face, clearly frustrated with the violation of her person he was implying. “No. That is my information. I thought it might be relevant to resolving the situation in Bozja.”

[Eligor]

“Well as it happens you just proved me right. Now, if you’ll excuse me…”

He began slowly walking towards the stairs while nursing his arm wound with Veldi staring angrily after him.

[Yoake]

“The Pantheon,” she added as he started walking away. “Please…” she added, the statement more as a heartfelt request rather than a command.

[Eligor]

“Squeeze it out of her. Or would you have me suffer and bleed for your curiosity?”

He continues up the stairs, grumbling to himself.

[Yoake]

She lets the issue go following his progress up the stairs momentarily before turning to Veldi, wrapping one of her arms across her to grasp on to the other near the elbow, fiddling with the fabric at her sleeve, a habit of hers that was a subtle way of self-soothing. At last she spoke.

“…Shall we talk?”

[Veldi]

Veldi put away her revolver, still appearing upset.

“About?”

[Yoake]

“Anything. My presence upsets you.” She looks around. “We do not need to stay here though.”

[Veldi]

“You got somewhere else to go?”

[Yoake]

“I am staying in Moraby Bay and will need to return there eventually.” She moves the to the door and opens it, heading out. “I am not fond of this place. I do not want to speak here. Outside is enough if you do not want to go far though.”

[Veldi]

She steps outside, hands searching her coat for a cigar that wasn’t there.

“So I’m out here. Go on.”

[Yoake]

She turns and just bows deeply before Veldi, holding her pose parallel to the ground. Her voice is unsteady for once, emotion she has been holding in threatening to burst forth, but for now, it simply trembles.

“I apologize. For failing the mission. For allowing this circumstance. For making things difficult. These stem from my actions. I cannot undo them. I… I am sorry.”

She waits in this humble pose as if waiting for permission to exist in the same space as her.

[Veldi]

“It’s too convenient.”

She jabs her hands into her pockets and looks at the aetheric pool all but destroying the front lawn.

“You die, and I’m left here. Left like that for….a long time. You weren’t there. Then the kids get hurt. You weren’t there. The world kept goin an’ you weren’t there.”

She thumbs her nose.

“But I’m right there—ready to let go because everyone around me just gets hurt and—“

She snaps her fingers

“—Just like that, you’re back. For what? To teach me a lesson? To hurt me again? Even now you supposedly get a second chance and you use it to…to what? Come here and get fuckin involved again?”

“What’s so uncomfortable about the house huh? You came back here—in more ways than one, it’s full of little toys to get you back into another fight—what’s to fuckin not be fond of? How much of you are you, and how much is whatever he’s made you do?”

[Yoake]

She raises from her position slowly, hands balled into fists as she channels the tension of her emotion to her arms, preferring it to be there as long as possible.

“This place is a house of violation. Boundaries were crossed and rules of nature were broken. My skin crawls here if I am forced to think on it.”

“I… I had no knowledge of what I missed. There is a blank space. No perception. My mind ceased and then it awakened again. I… I have memory. I do not know if it is real. I do not know what is missing. I feel like how I remember myself to be.”

She turns away sharply and a hand moves to her face, reaching over her horns to rub at her eyes in a casual sort of way to try to mask the true process. A shuddering breath is taken before she continues.

“I asked to see you in Bozja. You are the only one I knew who would believe I live. The only certain tie I have to what was before. He mentioned you and I thought of nothing else but doing that. I wanted to make amends for my error. He told me you were upset. I wanted to show you I lived. I wanted to help you, but I had to agree to conditions for safety. I woke up the day before that. It was dangerous and I agreed to follow his orders in order to go. I came to give information today in case it would help you. I do not intend to do anything more for him.”

She turns to face her again, toward Veldi, looking over her shoulder, graceful trails of tears shining proudly on a calm face.

“I did not ask for this. I would never ask for this. But I am here now. That is the best I can do.”

[Veldi/Eligor]

“Listen…”

“Violated!?”

Eligor appeared in the doorway, eyes glowing and a snarl on his face.

“You dare call my artistry violation!?”

Veldi turned around to attack but something was wrong. A black void appeared to open around her hand before promptly sucking her into it and out of view.

“That is what you feel when you walk with lungs full of air through this bright world as opposed to that dark nothing I pulled you from?”

“I give you life, I give you tools, I give you freedom and you call my tireless effort…a violation.”

He deflates a little and turns around, rubbing his now reddened bandage.

“I’m so tired of you all.”

[Yoake]

Yoake turned in alarm as Veldi was pulled away from her, and her face was full of genuine worry. But it shifted to anger as she approached him, peering down, retraint thrown out the window.

“I have been patient! I have been measured! I am allowed this! I am not a doll that will find everything agreeable! I can be grateful to live and feel uncomfortable about the means. You, a stranger, knows more than I do about my own self. Am I not allowed to feel uncomfortable about that imbalance? I can mourn my losses and celebrate my victories! It has not been long! I am coming to terms with things!”

She places her hands on her hips, more animated that she had been as she tries and sort her thoughts, keen mind strategizing as she vomits out her thoughts.

“Where is she?”

[Eligor]

“Wherever I deigned to put her! You assumed on your own I know more about you than you do. You imagined me to be something without even asking.”

“Do not pretend as if I hid any information from you—you chose to simmer like this.”

[Yoake]

“I am still deciding what I want to know and what I do not! I am not ready to ask questions of you yet. I will in time, when I am ready to ask them. When I know what to ask! Allow me my discomfort.”

She takes a deep breath and releases it, composing herself.

“Just this day I was grateful to feel the sun. I walked here to purposely feel it again. You imagined me to be in a state of full denial and regret. I am not.”

[Eligor]

“Children, all of you! Throwing tantrums left and right without a care or thought in the world! Crying and whining and moaning and groaning forever!”

“It is little wonder this world would burn with the sad reality that is people like you being exceptional amongst the generic and the weak. If people like you are to be the best this world can produce, my predictions are more than just likely, they are guaranteed!”

“Threatening to kill me out of your desperation to have her resolve feelings whilst demanding I allow you time to resolve yours….children…”

[Yoake]

“You lecture me when throwing your own tantrum. Strange that you would work with people at all if you find what comes most natural distasteful.”

She lets out a small sigh, seeming to have shrugged off her outburst. “But I admit I lost mastery of myself. I will not apologize for my emotions. I will apologize for words spoken without care.”

She pauses. “Why is it that you enjoy provoking these tantrums? You seemed to enjoy pushing her further.”

[Eligor]

“It’s not about enjoyment. She wants an excuse, and knows I will blatantly give it to her to spite her desires. Stress relief, and all that. Or did you truly believe I made videos fiddling around with you for fun?”

“Ah, a video is a recording—ah, a recording is say….a moving picture of things that have already happened.”

“Not sure how experienced you are with imperial wonders.”

[Yoake]

“I am more experienced than I would like to be. It is regrettable that I am. But I am not familiar with that technology. I thought it was a word for a log or record from context.”

She bows her head in an apologetic sort of way. “My understanding of Eorzean humor is poor. I have a history of taking most statements for their face value.”

[Eligor]

“There would need to be merit in it.”

“I’ve no real plan to spread the method or the practice.”

[Yoake]

“I have difficulty imagining the concept to know if it would have merit.”

She pauses a moment, looking away as if deciding whether it was worth asking.

“Is Veldi safe?”

[Eligor]

“No one is safe anymore. Is that not why you are risking your second life working?”

[Yoake]

“I am working to obtain shelter and to regain a quality of life I knew before. My possessions have been lost. I must start again.”

[Eligor]

“I’m sure if you asked my apprentice she’d pay you as much as you want.”

[Yoake]

“You said I am difficult to kill. And….I can feel the difference. My work is much less dangerous to me than it once was.”

[Eligor]

“So you like it.”

[Yoake]

“It has advantages.”

[Eligor]

“I am the violator indeed.”

[Yoake]

“I cannot undo what has been done. I can only make what I can of the result.”

[Eligor]

“Implying you would.”

“Do you want to undo what has been done girl?”

[Yoake]

“….Not today.”

[Eligor]

“So no. Exactly.”

“It is difficult to release power. Even moreso when there is no harm in it.”

“Or is it a Doman custom to be ashamed of what you have because you did not struggle for it entirely on your own?”

[Yoake]

“I have difficulty accepting things I did not work for. Precisely why I have not asked for aid and why I continue to work.”

“Whether it is a trait of my culture or a personal characteristic, I cannot say.”

[Eligor]

“We should hope it is the latter or your entire homeland is composed of hypocrites.”

[Yoake]

Her fists tighten and squeeze as she lets some emotion related to that statement wash over her and leave without speaking on it. “Moving back to Veldi. I would like to continue our conversation. Is it possible?”

[Eligor]

“Is what possible?”

[Yoake]

“Speaking with her. I do not know where you have put her. I do not know if she is in a safe place or somewhere I can go.”

[Eligor]

“She stabbed me, and you were mean.”

“I feel like putting her somewhere else at a tender moment is completely fair.”

[Yoake]

“You are beginning to sound like a child now as well.” She closes her eyes in annoyance.

[Eligor]

“I thought you might feel that way. Fortunately you still want information, yes?”

“Or will you wait to hear directly from her for real?”

[Yoake]

“I do. I will wait if you cannot tell me my portion of the information without sharing her secrets. I only wish to understand the nature of my position in this life.”

[Eligor]

“Position?”

[Yoake]

“This pantheon - I appear to be playing a role I do not know about.”

[Eligor]

“Nothing particularly real to you. You just hold significance for people you’ve never seen.”

“But you’ll not be receiving prayers.”

[Yoake]

She shakes her head, confused. “I do not understand.”

[Eligor]

“Nor are you meant to. You do not wish to be a god.”

[Yoake]

“Lack of knowledge does not make a truth disappear.”

“I would know regardless.”

[Eligor]

“Think of yourself as a shield to innocent dead.”

“Further explanation. Would….hurt your friend.”

“Besides, knowledge of the pantheon is tantamount to joining it. I do not think you would truly desire such a thing. You are still so….focused on the self.”

[Yoake]

“Some other day then. I would know whether it poses danger to me though for now.”

[Eligor]

“It’s not a danger, no.”

“She thought I was forcing you into it.”

[Yoake]

“Ah. A misunderstanding then. Hopefully I can make it clear when next we speak.”

[Eligor]

“Perhaps. I’m going to head to the city. If you’re sleeping here do me a favor and clean my blood from the wall. Not required but if my daughters see it there will be problems, and I do not have enough time just now to see to it.”

[Yoake]

“I am not sleeping here. I have been offered a room from a new employer and have already moved my things. I can clean the blood as an apology for being mean.”

[Eligor]

“That works.”

He disappears into a cloud of smoke.

[Yoake]

As soon as he disappears she lowers herself into a squatting position, wrapping her arms around her knees and bowing her head as she lets out a shuddery sigh, partially relieved, mostly frustrated, and largely feeling like she had yet another failure of an interaction with Veldi to add to her books. Sitting like that for a few moments in this almost fetal-position like pose, she reflects on every step of the interaction, doubting, rehashing, straegizing, mitigating. Calculations of how to make amends were running through her mind before she finally sighs one last time and pushes herself to her feet and walks toward the house to rummage around for cleaning supplies.

Anyone who visited later would find the space spotless, no evidence of bloodshed happening in the slightest or her subsequent intervention, true to her word.
