07/23/22 - When the Cold Sets In

— Notes: Blue is DM for this Roleplay —

[DM]

Ravenous, salivating fangs clamped down on Tressene's arm. It mattered not that she was armored- a desperate hunger prompted a desperate act from the silver wolf now scrabbling to dig in on metal and the tender flesh beneath.
It was not alone. Called a 'Superpack' by the locals in the Western Highlands of Coerthas, the mission had been simple- cull the wolf pack before they dared to venture into settlements for easy prey. Given two novice knights for support, the Duskwight and her new companions had ventured deeper into the harsh and unforgiving wildlands. At the Twinpools, they would find their targets in the land of eternal white.

A sharp clanging noise would jolt Tressene's senses as Lane's shield was knocked free from his grip by a trio of wolves with glittering eyes. They surrounded the young midlander who spun his spear about wildly at them. He shouted at the beastkin.

“Stay back, away!!”

Nearby, an elezen named Ishault parried the attack of one beast with his own shield, struggling with the weight of his sword as he drove it deep into the heart of another.

The mission was supposed to be simple but the pack had gotten too large. Far too large.

Lane - 3/5 Ishault - 4/5

[Tressene]

Tess shook her head lightly as she regained herself. Looking down at the wolf that had started to attempt to chew on her arm.

“Oh a moment dear. I will give you my attention soon.”

Shaking her arm, she’d attempt to throw the wolf off herself. Pointing the tip of her sword towards Lane, above his head a small ball of light would form. Before it exploded, sending small light spears out and around him to maim, kill, or dissuade them from attacking lane while he was vulnerable,

[DM]

With no means of keeping purchase on Tressene's armor aside from scrambling claws, the wolf was thrown with relative ease. It was clear that the beasts themselves posed little threat individually. In larger numbers however…

The spears that the Duskwight threw down struck one of the trio of wolves surrounding Lane right through its neck. It toppled to the ground, blood spattering across the white landscape as its brethren jumped back and away from the fumbling knight. If only Lane hadn't chosen that same moment to taunt the dead wolf, laughing shakily and poking it in the chest with his spear.

“Serves you right, damned beastkin. Thank you Lady-”

The two remaining wolves lunged at the midlander while he spoke, one clamping down powerful jaws around Lane's wrist, while the other leapt straight into his face, forcing the man to stumble backwards as the hungry wolf tried to get at the face beneath his helmet.

Tess was not without her own issues to deal with but it was difficult not to be distracted by the sheer incompetence of the companions she had been given. While more silver wolves began to gather and prowl warily around the duskwight, the other elezen in the party couldn't seem to prevent his sword hand from shaking as he tried to get closer to the other knight-in-peril. The beastkin didn't seem to be intimidated in the least.

Party Health -

Lane - 2/5 Ishault - 4/5

[Tressene]

Tess clicked her tongue. Thankfully her helm hid the scowl on her face. SHe looked to Ishault and while she still sounded polite and musical in her voice, it had a stern undertone.

“Dear, Could you please go and fetch some others for assistance? I do believe that is how you can best help Lane here.”

She then turned her attention to the wolves that had started to gather close to her, Swinging out her sword, And arc of light would emit during the slash aiming towards the closest and most well gathered of the wolves, Turning she'd quickly throw her shield at the wolf that has lept onto Lanes face, Aiming to gain it's attention. If he survived she fully intended to give him a Stern Talking too.

[DM]

Ishault looked up at Tess at her words, his face stricken with panic at the current predicament. He looked from his companion to the knightess and back again, uncertainty in the midst of a battle not the best or most appropriate response to have. He looked to Lane again, mumbling out a weak “O-okay”. He made to move away from his midlander friend if only to find a number of wolfkin blocking his path.

Tess' arc of light struck the group closest to her, powerful slash sweeping back and culling a couple of the ravenous creatures immediately, though they quickly replaced their fallen with more. They snarled at the knightess and snapped at her heels as she drew the attention of the one attempting to maul off Lane's face. It released its powerful jaws and launched itself for Tess with a throaty growl. Lane fell back onto the ice with a thud, grabbing onto his helmet with his free hand. Somehow, miraculously, the starving creature hadn't torn it off. His wrist however was another matter entirely as it was pulled and yanked and shaken by another.

Lane - 2/5 Ishault - 4/5

[Tressene]

Tess sighed. She wasn’t having a good day as it where. Feeling an impulse starting to rise. She fought it down.

Tess would hold her sword before her as if she was praying, her pearl white armor begun to shine as a few seconds passed, and she pulsed with a blinding bright light, attempting to blind the wolves and gain their attention to allow Ishault to escape and maybe buy lane a few more seconds. Starting to bite her lip from under her helm.

“I do despise failure.”

[DM]

The second time proved to be the charm as Tess' blinding fury gave Ishault the chance he needed. He would not fail Tressene again, and stumbled off into the fog in the direction he was sure they had come- *hoped* they had come.

Lane was not so fortunate. Pretty lights would not sway a beast from its meal, and a panicked scream followed by the sound of torn flesh could be heard as the young knight found soon himself without a hand. A bloody stump remained and the scent seemed to draw the attention of the ravenous wolves.

“H-help me! Please!” Lane's voice was steadily growing weaker. He would not last long.

Lane- 1/5 Ishault - ¿Escaped?

[Tressene]

Tess was Not pleased. She started towards Lane. Now ignoring the wolves. She strode up to lane, making a frustrated swing at the wolf that had taken his hand from him.

“Of course my dear. Please. Relax. I will take care of this problem.”

Kneeling down as the soft glow of conjured white magic would stop the bleeding. Perhaps not relieve the pain but at least prevent him from dying.

Behind her, a black pair of clouds would start to appear over either of her shoulder blades. Doing nothing to hide her growing malice.

[DM]

The wolf yowled and then went silent before it could finish, the hand and its now-lifeless body collapsing onto the snow. It's brethren lunged for fresh meat, snapping and snarling at whatever they could wrestle from each other, providing Tressene the ability to come close to the dying knight and close up his wound. Did nothing whatsoever to stop the pain though and Lane was reduced to a whimpering mess, frantic gaze flickering over to the strange black clouds over Tess' shoulders. Had the weather suddenly changed? The very air felt different…

[Tressene]

Tess placed a hand on Lane’s cheek.

“Now close your eyes dear and try to relax. I will handle things here. You may start hallucinating due to the lose of blood, and the stress of loosing your hand. But we will get through this. Hm?”

After removing her helm and setting it in his lap, she’d offer a small smile. “I will be right back.”

Standing up, she’d wait to see what Lane did, regardless, she’d turn towards the surrounding wolves. “I apologize dears. You’ve made me very upset. And now I must do something with this frustration. Please, I would hope you take this personally. As it is very much so. Personal

With that with that last word, her voice would gain a sort of vibration to it as if possessed, the clouds that had started to form over her shoulders would take their true forms, a pair of long, giant demonic hands would appear and just extend out toward the wolves and begun to swipe and grab, mauling all in their path, a second pair would appear from her lower back after a few moments and join their brethren in the intended slaughter.

Tess would stand there watching, her eyes gaining a soft glow that highlighted and greatly enhanced her purple eyes pales hues. Looking like a pair of purple flames flickering.

Lane could not prevent himself from whimpering from the pain and the shock of it all. In spite of this, Tressene's words managed to reach the highlander's muddled brain. He gave a stiff nod and squeezed his eyes shut. He could feel that something was off, a strange growing feeling of unease settling in, but he didn't dare look. He was afraid he would open his eyes to snapping jaws.

Unfortunately closed eyes did little to prevent the slew of whines, yelps, and agonized screams that reached Lane's ears soon after as Tess tore the pack of hungry wolfkin asunder.

They tried to evade the dark grasping hands, wriggled and fought and bit, yet the wolves would find themselves incapable of doing so much as scratching the wings that mauled them. Instead the large majority sought escape but of the several who had surrounded the trio from the beginning, only two would limp away to freedom while their brethren were mangled and ripped and shredded.

The ground was painted in blood and entrails and body parts, all of which beginning to congeal upon the snow.

The threat had been handled. The mission had been accomplished. Yay!

[Tressene]

Tess let out a sigh of relief. Her malice has been sated.

Kneeling back down she’d cup the highlanders cheek. “Things have been sorted. Shall we head back? I hope our friend hasn’t gotten lost on his way back home. Hm?”

She’d place a hand on the helm she had set in his lap as she wait to see if he’d want to get up.

All traces of the Claws had vanished

[DM]

Lane absolutely did not want to get up. The sounds of violence and the sudden silence aside from cold racing winds did not inspire confidence. He tensed as his cheek was cupped, expecting death to follow, but there were only words. He opened his eyes to the bloodbath, taking in the scent of snow and meaty bits. He should speak. Should reply to his savior's words, but in truth the highlander was scared shitless. He made some semblance of noise, staring at Tess with wide eyes before beginning to move, allowing her to acquire her helmet again as he stumbled to his feet.

“I…I…m-massacre, what did….you???” Oh good, he could speak after all. He also remembered that he was missing a hand as he tried to grab his weapon without the necessary appendage. The poor man started wailing again.

[Tressene]

Tess smiled softly. “My dearest Lane, some questions are better left unanswered Hm? They threatened the life of one I care after. So of course I removed the problem.”

Looking down sadly. “Yes, that is…not good. I know of some smiths that might be able to forge you a new one…Though it will not be the same at least you will have a hand again.”

She took his not stub forearm into her hands, a soft glow would emanate from her palm, numbing the pain.

“I can do at least this much for you now. Let’s get you home before we are found out here by some unwanted guests. Hm?”

Aiming to lead him away sliding her helm back into her head with her free hand.

[DM]

Lane seemed to be going into shock, but at least he was cooperative. Though the pain was numbed the ordeal and aftermath was too much for an apprentice knight to deal with. He could not even comprehend what Tess had done to quell the masses of wolfkin out for blood. It was best not to ask. Instead he let her lead him away from the blood-spattered snow, back to his friend and to civilization. Back to family.

The man mumbled a single “Okay” in answer, words barely legible if not for Tressene's sharp duskwight hearing, stumbling after the woman and trying to look at anywhere and anything that was not his missing arm.

[Tressene]

Tess continued to lead Lane along. Though now she had the helm on she didn’t need to smile.

Looking back at him she wore a scowl for a moment before she continued on. “Least there will be no one else hurt for some time due to these wolf attacks. I am sorry about your injury. It’s due to my own negligence. Yet another thing I must strive to prevent happening again.”

[DM]

“It's not your fault!” The young knight stammered quickly. He stumbled forward in the snow and had to catch himself from using a hand he no longer had, awkwardly using her weaker arm to balance out once more.

“It's mine. It was too much. I thought the job would be easier. I thought we would be done within the bell. I was not prepared and I was punished. At least Ishy was smart enough to get away. I am sorry I disappointed you Miss Tressene.”

[Tressene]

Tess shook her head as she continued one. “He didn't run to save his own skin. He ran because I ordered him to send for reinforcements. It could easily have been you. But, That's not important. As long as you've learned from this. Then you have not disappointed me.”

She smiled under her helm. “After all, There is still much for us all to learn. Is that not the joy of life? So don't dwell too much on it. But do learn from it.”

[DM]

“I will, Miss Tressene.” The highlander had nothing else to say, much of his emotions spent and gone under the duress of the day. He stared down at the footprints left in the snow by the paladin, following after like a lost lamb.

Thankfully for the both of them, it would not be long before reinforcements would arrive to give further aid due to the actions of Ishault. Both were secured on chocobos for faster traveling back to the Falcon's nest, where Lane would be taken into treatment. Tressene meanwhile would have to deal with the excited clamor of the local guards, grateful to see another threat in an already inhospitable area reduced.

Once more, Tressene had saved the day.```
