01/04/22 - Adrift in Sunless Sea

[Blue]

Blue and Sura wouldn't take terribly long to travel to the place mentioned in the linkpearl. It was rather far, going to La Noscea always was, but with the Xaela having learned to teleport, the waterfall in question was only a brisk walk away. Water sprites dangled in the air like ornaments which instantly tore the child's attention away from anything else. She was dressed in a little raincoat just for the occasion. Blue meanwhile wore her usual attire and waited for Novine who likely wasn't far behind in the least.

[Novine]

Novine seemed a bit guarded as she walked to the suggested location, dressed in something that covered a little more than usual, the cooler morning and winter tainted water making the spray brisker than usual. Her hair was arranged in two long pigtails with little butterfly ornaments perched at the spot where they were tied up.

She waved and had a weird air about her, as if she was suspicious about this meeting. The location had meaning now and she wasn't sure as to Blue's motivations for choosing somewhere so remote for a chat.

“Hi,” she said simply.

[Blue]

The Xaela waved when she spotted Novine, a small smile on her lips and a wag of her tail to follow. Sura looked up from her frantic grabbing of a water sprite, which had thus far only rewarded the child with a mouth full of water in return. She still politely waved though before going back to swiping with renewed energy.

“Sorry, it was probably pointless to make you come here since he seems able to appear anyplace he likes, but I still thought it better than our own homes.”

“Has your father been acting strange lately? Tret says he's seemed tired but didn't notice anything else. You're closer, have you noticed something?”

[Novine]

It was clear she didn't exactly enjoy the topic at hand, fully wanting to believe everything had been solved for a good while.

“….He's always been tired though. Works too much! I thought maybe if I got him a nice pillow and a blanket for Starlight maybe he'd sleep more. But not really. He's just been working on stuff, same as he did before that Thing got real bad.”

[Blue]

“That Thing came to visit me the other night. It has said that your Father is planning to do something soon. Something that involves taking my Sister's grimoire away from her willingly or by force.”

[Novine]

Novine stared at Blue for a moment, gears turning the implications in her mind, thoughts chewing in the words. She eventually stepped away and moved toward the edge of the cliff, sitting down and dangling her legs off the edge as she watched the water. Her Crystal glowed behind her hair as she took in her snack of aether.

“Did it know why he's doing that?” she asked after absorbing the truth rather gracefully. “Even though it's… Sort of like a parent to me too, I don't really know much about how it helped him and why he'd want it back with him. I just want to make sure he's not trying to do some stupid killing himself thing again.”

[Blue]

Blue sighed, tucking in a strand of hair back behind her fin before walking closer to sit beside her and stare off at the waterfall ahead.

“It implied that what he wanted done was something that Veldi would never bring herself to do.” She fidgeted and placed her hands in her lap.

“I know my Sister and trust her judgement. She lives to save people, like me. If it's something she wouldn't do, then I can only imagine what that might mean.”

[Novine]

Novine looks up and kicks her legs a bit.

“I'll have to ask him I guess. …Makes me wonder how much he really doesn't wanna be here with us. If he's really that unhappy. If I've just been selfish doing all I'm doing.”

Some sparks crackle around Novine but they die down quickly.

“But maybe I'm just… I'm trying not to make stuff up about what he thinks. Best to just ask him for the truth I guess.”

[Blue]

“I hope you have better luck than me. I told Veldi exactly what it said and it feels like she just brushed it off. I don't want her to get hurt but I know I can't stop her from doing what she wants to do.”

Blue leaned back on her hands and closed her eyes.

“Having a family is hard. Doesn't matter how close we are or how much we want to protect them, they have their own choices to make.”

[Novine]

“….But we just got here. Raziel and me. It's not fair,” she mumbled, pulling her legs up and folding them into her chest, wrapping her arms around them and curling into a little ball.

“It'd be a stupid choice. I'm allowed to be selfish. I'm his daughter. That's what I'm supposed to do. I'm supposed to rely on him and need him. He's not supposed to want to die. That's not his job. If he wanted to do that, then why'd he even ask me if I wanted to be his daughter? Would've been easier and he could do whatever the hells he wanted.”

She tossed a rock off the cliff, brow furrowing. “Stupid.”

[Blue]

“Never said it wasn't stupid, or that we can't still try to make a difference.” The Xaela responded, opening her eyes again.

“If he asked you to be his daughter, maybe in spite of all that he does to contradict it, there's still a part there that just wants to stay. Might be a small part, but it's there.” She shrugged her shoulders.

“You should want to keep your family together anyway, if it means that much to you. I know that with Veldi, Tret, and Sura for that matter, I'd do anything to keep them from being hurt if I could. I constantly wish it were as simple as trading pain for pain. I could stand it. It'd be okay. Let it be me and not them, ever.”

“My sister is stubborn but I love her. If she gets hurt in whatever this is, I….I don't know. I can't lose her. That thing gave me a vial of your father's blood, said she'd need it to survive, but how can I even trust it after everything it has done to us? Could just be some other stupid trick. Maybe your dad is fine and that thing is just causing trouble. I don't know what to think.”

[Novine]

“Hm. Well, I'll bug him. Dunno if he'll tell me what's actually going in, but we had a talk awhile ago about not hiding stuff so I don't think he'd hide it if I asked him directly. Hopefully I'll get him instead of that dumb Thing.”

[Blue]

“If it helps uh…that Thing isn't that great at mimicking your dad anyway so you should be able to tell. Let me know if you find out anything.”

“The peace and quiet was nice, n' now I'm worrying again.” She shook her head just as a drenched Sura bounded up to Novine. She wiggled her fingers at her and smiled.

[Novine]

I was always able to tell,“ Novine said, looking a bit stubborn bad proud. It was mostly the truth, she thought anyway.

She looked over to Sura and waved, clearly not in the cheeriest mood, but trying her best to not brood.

“Anyways it's fine. We'll figure it out. Always manage to find a way through this stuff somehow.”

[Blue]

Blue wrapped the soaked-through kit into a hug before nodding at Novine's words.

“I'm grateful for what your father has done for us, Tret's quite fond of him as well. I don't want conflict, but if my sister's in trouble..” She shook her head and stood up, brushing stray water droplets from her dress.

”..Anyway hopefully we find out more before anything actually happens. Take care Novine.“

Sura bounced to attention, ears flicking at her mother's words. “Care, Pretty Butterfly!”

[Novine]

“Yep - I guess I'll let you know if I hear anything worth hearing.” Novine grinned slightly at Sura. “Yep, you too.”

She turned her attention back to the waterfall, hugging her knees a bit closer and resting her cheek on top of them, leaving herself to her thoughts.

[Blue]

Blue nodded and took Sura's hand, letting Novine take some time to process while the pair themselves would take a leisurely stroll back through the farmland nearby and eventually back to their home once more.
