09/17/21 - The Big Favor
[Tretesta]
Almost to the second, there came a tapping, as if some one gently rapping, rapping at Vinalo's front door. Twas only Tret. And nothi- Well, Tretesta and A'sura. One loaded with a bag of amusements and clutching a chocobo plushie. The other carrying a grim expression and a longsword underneath a dark blue coat. He would call at the door as well, seeming a little less patient than normal
“It's us.”
[Vinalo]
Vinalo was very close to home when the call came, and decidedly picked up the pace returning when Tret gave a distinct ETA. Though the message sounded innocent enough, they knew well enough that a call out of nowhere like this was unlikely to be for benign reasons. They'd only gotten home a couple minutes when the knock happened.
The door would open slowly, revealing a Vinalo who looked more concerned than usual.
“Tret, Sura. Hello,” they said quietly. “What's going on?”
[Sura]
Sura looked pale, staring straight ahead and clutching her chocobo plush all the tighter before the door opened and she blinked briefly at Vinalo. There was a low murmur in the back of her throat before her gaze settled over Vinalo's shoulder once more.
[Tretesta]
Tret kneels down to both in his companys' levels, voice low for being in the hall still “It's very short notice. I am eternally sorry. But I need you to keep an eye on her for… A few hours. I will owe you dearly for this, anything I can reasonably do for you.”
[Vinalo]
Vinalo looked between their two guests, not speaking for just a moment. The tension was all too apparent, between Sura's expression and Tret's urgency. And Blue's absence. They sighed.
“…Right. Misha should be home soon. We'll… take care of Sura just fine. Just… do what you need to do. And make sure you come back on time.”
They looked to Sura, trying their best to put on a smile.
“We'll all have a good time, right Sura? We could bake some more cookies, or maybe something else.”
[Sura]
Sura glanced at Tret, ears flattening.
```Afraid again. Scared. Delivered the message. Saved everyone..no death?```
She didn't feel assured, especially not with what Tret had told her he was going to do before they made their way to Vinalo and Misha's.
The child turned and wrapped her arms around his neck in one swift motion before pulling away and nodding to Vinalo, sniffling.
[Tretesta]
Tret turns now to Sura and gives a small smile before she came at him with the hug. He squeezed her tightly and muttered to her before she could leave. “Come on now. Going to be ok. I'll be back for you very very soon, and we'll have a nice quiet cuddly evening in front of the fire tonight, alright? You, me, and Blue. Just need you to be a good girl for Vinalo for a little while right now, and everything will be alright for us. Promise.”
[Vinalo]
Vinalo bit their lip as Tret said what they assumed were some reassuring words, opening the door wide to allow Sura in after she released him.
“Come on, Sura. We can tend the plants until Misha gets home. Everything'll be fine.”
They turned to Tret and silently mouthed something.
'Please.'
[Sura]
Sura wiped at her eyes and slowly trudged through the door and past Vinalo with her little bag of toys and playthings that wouldn't nearly distract her as much from her current thoughts. She'd be a good girl and wait until both Blue and Tret returned for her once more.
[Tretesta]
Tret stood up fully again and looked down to Vinalo “Just a few hours. I've got too much to come back for, neh? Couldn't stand to be away too long. Again. Very sorry.”
[Vinalo]
Vinalo watched as Sura walked past them, keeping the smile as she did so. They turned back to Tret, looking quite serious.
“You do, Tret. You really do. Both of you,” they said in a rather serious tone. “Don't you make me a liar, okay?”
[Tretesta]
“You a liar? Ahhh, Vin. Vin, Vin, Vin. We have to! Or, well… I don't really know yet. Best not to think on it. Just makes me sad and angry. Will see you in a bit!” He pulled his hood up and turned to head down the hall again, raising a hand in farewell
[Vinalo]
“We'll be waiting, Tret. Whatever you're heading into… just do the best you can.” Vinalo gave their own little wave, though less enthusiastic than usual.
They watched the man head out the doors to the lobby before returning to their own apartment. Door closed and locked, they let out a small sigh. Looking over to Sura, they tried put on their best encouraging look.
“We'll do our best here, Sura. Have a nice and quiet time. You and me and Misha,” Vinalo said in a soft voice. “Something scary happened, but… we'll make it through, okay?”
[Sura]
Sura stared after Tret even after the door had closed behind them. When she looked back at Vinalo, her face was easy to read, even if the girl chose not to express them herself.
```Scared. Frightened. Fearful.```
She could feel it when she ran home. She didn't understand what it was exactly or why it felt like she'd witnessed something similar before. Sura only knew that when that man disappeared with Blue so to did that feeling…but not the dread or sense of foreboding.
These were things that, even if she wanted to speak, could not describe. It felt safer not letting anyone know, for fear of that feeling returning like a curse.
And now they were both out there. And they would feel it too, soon.
It was all Sura could do to nod numbly at Vinalo's words whether she believed them to be true or not.
```Come…back..safe.```
[Vinalo]
It didn't take a child expert to read Sura's (lack of) expression. Vinalo had seen the look enough times in their work, after all. Never failed to make their heart sink, at least a little bit, even after everything.
“…I know, Sura. I know.” Vinalo held out their hand. “Let's go make some tea and wait for Misha.”
[Sura]
Sura stared down at Vinalo's hand and hugged her plushie tightly to her chest before reaching out to take it.
```Just a few bells. He said so. Drink tea. Play. But can't forget.```
(Fadeout) |
[Tretesta]
A few hours later… |
Night had recently fallen over the Black Shroud. Birds trilled their last songs. Insects started theirs. And many homes were just finishing up evening meals. In the Lily Hills, there surely would not be an end to the peace. Well… Outside of a small shriek in the hall and the Slamming of a door. The door to apartment number three. If all was quiet in other apartments, the sound of heavy bootfall might be heard advancing further up the hall. And then two heavy knocks at another door.
The door of Apartment Four.
[Vinalo]
Worry. The reassurance given by Tret just a few bells ago didn't do much to help the worry that struck the second he and Sura showed up at their door. Explaining the situation to Misha when he got home also didn't do much, though they both surely did their best to keep a strong face for their young guest.
Tea was brewed. Froggy macaroons were made. Tensions were calmed, at least for a while. Vinalo was currently showing Sura the best ways to test a plant's soil (which might've involved tasting it) when the pair of knocks rang through the apartment. They looked at Sura and across the room to Misha before walking up to the door.
“…Tret? Is that you?” they asked in a hopeful tone.
[Sura]
Sura had been on her best behavior during her stay with Vinalo and Misha, but it didn't take much to tell that the girl was distracted, her attention floating away from the baking of macaroons and the tasting of soil to glance up at the Paissa-shaped clock and then to the door. She never complained but she didn't speak her fears either, only doing the best to keep her mind busy with other things.
```But that feeling. The BIG feeling. Felt bad. Scary. Something too big to hide from. Something that doesn't go away if you curl up into a ball.```
Indeed, it was all Sura could do to help out the pair, for every sound that did not come from them caused the girl to stiffen, a moment's notice away from hiding behind a chair or under the table.
```They are out there. They might not come back. No! I need them to come back. They need to come back..```
Her ears had already heard the shrieking sound, perking up atop her head as heavy footfalls made it to the front of the apartment door. Sura froze in place, eyes wide and wary as Vinalo stepped up to the entrance.
[Tretesta]
A muffled voice from the other side of the door “Oh thank God, I got it right this time. I told you it was this one or that one… Should have tried this first.” Now the voice wasmore clear, as if directed at the door “yeah, it's me. Told ya… Just a few hours.”
Once the door was finally opened, a bedraggled and weary looking man, open carrying a big fuck-off revolver on his hip and a sword over his shoulder, would take up the doorway. Much as he had when visiting the occupants of apartment 3 a few moments ago. And he'd stumble in a step, as if he had been leaning on the door
[Blue]
Blue, much smaller than the taller, imposing man in the door frame, peeked out from under his arm and beamed at Vinalo.
“Hiya!”
[Vinalo]
Vinalo put a hand to their chest and let out a sigh of relief upon hearing Tret's voice. They turned back to the others in the room and nodded before opening the door wide. A relieved smile crossed their face upon seeing both of their friends standing before them.
“Gods, you're alright! Both of you!”
[Tretesta]
“Alright? Vin. Vin. Viiiiin. I told you. Few hours. Was Just a… Little dinner party. Went about how I expected it to. But enough about my boring evening. Sura! Ready to go home for that nice cuddle I talked about?!” His voice was suddenly quite chipper and playful, but he wouldn't crouch down to welcome her to them. He couldn't. If he tried to rest even a little now, he wouldn't get up.
[Sura/Blue]
Vinalo wouldn't get a chance to spread the door wide open for the pair before the blur that was Sura passed them and tackled over Blue with a surprisingly amount of force for a child.
Blue fell backwards with a little grunt and a giggle before hugging the girl tightly to herself.
“M-mo-” The kit mumbled before tearing up and shaking her head. Her cheeks were red, and she stutter-fumbled out a slew of unfamiliar words.
“M-mommy! D-da-ddy!”
They felt foreign and strange on her tongue, yet right all the same.
[Tretesta]
“…<Fuck me.> I might just melt right here… Was not ready for that.”
[Misha]
Meanwhile, Misha is watching with critical eyes, arms crossed.
“I hope whatever it is you did was worth this child's tormenting worry.” A pause. “And Vinalo's.”
[Tretesta]
Tret turns from the rather endearing show going on in the hall over to Misha, offering her the same winning smile he'd given Vinalo “You know? Probably not. But it's done. and I owe you both for the trouble, as I said I would before I left. But ahh… Can we settle up a little later? I'll come back around in…” He takes another look at Blue and Sura behind him, then back to Misha “… Day or two? Yeah. Ish. I'll pay my debt, no worry.”
[Misha]
“I did not know you would be in debt to us. Tis what friendship is for, yes?”
She sighs and flaps a hand at Tret.
“I am sure Vinalo feels the same. Tis the least we could do.”
[Vinalo]
“S-Sura!” was all they got out as the young girl zoomed past them, right into Blue. Their eyes widened a bit as Sura finally spoke. A smile. After a moment of taking that in, they turned back up to Tret and Blue.
“Misha's right. You don't owe us anything,” Vinalo said with a little smile. “Except maybe an explanation, later.”
[Blue/Sura]
“Tret can explain later then!” The bubbly voice of Blue broke from the bit of conversation as she finally had enough wits about her to scoot herself into a sitting, and then standing position, releasing Sura from her hug just in time for the Miqo' child to tackle Tret's leg and wrap her arms around it in an even tighter hug.
The Xaela staggered a little bit and yawned. She was also quite tired, rubbing at her eyes.
“But thank you both so much for watching her. I'm really sorry for the trouble. It's my fault really.” Her ears flattened.
“Anyways, allow us a little bit of time to rest and we'll return with a -” Blue tilted her at Tret thoughtfully. “A story!”
[Vinalo]
“It's fine, Blue. Just glad to see you both well,” Vinalo said, continued relief obvious in their voice. “And… I've a feeling you'll need all the rest you can get.”
They glance over to Tret's unusually stiff form.
“Right?”
[Tretesta]
“little nap, maybe…” He would not be felled by the low attack. But Tret's off hand reached down to scratch about Sura's ears “But this pushed the bounds of friendship and all that. Like I said. I'll come make payment soon come on, girls… I could use a bite to eat, too. Vin. Misha. Thank you both. Will see you soon!” He gave them both a wink and then turned on his heel, stumping off slowly with the child still attached to his leg. Maybe just for a bit, maybe all the way down the hall and beyond…
[Blue]
Blue trudges off after her family, but not before giving the pair a tired wave of her own. She didn't even skip down the halls! Lizard girl was tuckered out.
[Vinalo]
“Take care, all of you. We'll talk soon.”
Vinalo waves to the departing family, closing the door as the trio leaves down the hall. They turn back to Misha and let out a sigh.
“Least for now, it looks like everyone's safe. Better than what I was dreading for a bit.”
[Misha]
“I wonder how long that'll last.”
She mutters, going to Vinalo to envelop them in a tight hug.
“Your mind always assumes the worst, although it is not helped by how reckless your friends are.”
[Vinalo]
They smirk just in time to find themselves in Misha's embrace.
“I don't assume the worst. Just… worry. Seen too many terrible things not to,” Vinalo retorts, still within her arms. “Still consider myself an optimist, you know.”
A content hum.
“Reckon we should clean up, then. Still some bells left in the day. And then… some rest.”
[Misha]
“Indeed. Sura did not cause much of a mess, but I admit I might have in my attempt to distract the child.”
She releases them and pecks their forehead, drifting to the kitchen to wash whatever wishes were left.
[Vinalo]
“The frog macaroons were awfully cute, Misha. And tasty. Might have to keep the recipe in mind.”
Vinalo simply smiles as they were kissed, watching as Misha headed to the kitchen. After a moment they follow her, briefly thinking of what could've happened today. Several things crossed their mind, but they knew it wouldn't amount to anything until later. For now, it was time to clean and rest.
